A genuine laboratory-grown gemstone is created in a controlled environment rather than mined. When it is a true counterpart of the named stone, it has essentially the same crystal structure and chemical, optical and physical properties. It is not a simulant, although its origin, growth features, rarity and value differ from a mined stone.
Colored laboratory-grown stones may be produced by flame fusion, flux or hydrothermal growth, depending on the material. Laboratory-grown diamonds are commonly produced by HPHT or CVD. The process is not the same for every gemstone.

The method depends on the gemstone. Colored stones may be produced by flame fusion, flux or hydrothermal growth. Laboratory-grown diamonds are commonly produced by HPHT or CVD. Each method creates crystal growth under controlled conditions, but there is no single process used for every lab-grown gemstone.

Suitability depends on the gem and setting, not whether it was mined or laboratory-grown. Diamond ranks 10 on the Mohs scale, ruby and sapphire 9, alexandrite 8.5, and emerald about 7.5-8. Emerald generally benefits from more mindful wear and a protective setting.

Many insurers cover laboratory-grown gemstone jewelry, but acceptance and valuation rules vary. Keep your invoice and any supplied report, and confirm coverage directly with your insurer or specialist jewelry insurer.
Use care suited to the gemstone and setting. Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush are a sensible starting point for many rings. Avoid harsh chemicals and hard impacts. Emeralds and fracture-filled stones should not automatically be placed in ultrasonic or steam cleaners.
